Nilsen decided to dispose of Howlett’s body piece by piece. He covered his bathroom floor with plastic garbage bags, dragged the body out from his closet, and dissected it there. He cut off the soft parts of the body and flushed them down the toilet.

The process was taking hours. So, Nilsen thought it might be quicker to boil the flesh down to a soup-like mixture. It would also make it a lot easier to flush down the toilet, avoiding any backups or overflows. When the head was cooked enough, he scooped out the brains and flushed them as well.

The larger bones and parts that were firm were wrapped up in plastic bags. He laid those out on the floor, packed them with salt, and left them for the garbage man to pick up. Nilsen kept a few of the larger pieces; he thought the garbage man might not take all of them, and questions might arise.
